Blogger Spotlight: Chanel Butler

Today I’m so excited to feature one of my personal favorites, style blogger Chanel Butler of Chanel Files. I actually happened across her blog in 2012 when I was looking for black girls with ombre hair so I’ve been following her for a while.

First post of Chanel’s I ever read. Is it weird that I remember that?

I’m really glad that I have the opportunity to feature her through Brown Girl Bloggers so let’s get right into it!

Chanel began blogging in Fall of 2010 simply to showcase her sense of style. At the time blogging was still uncommon so she thought it was the perfect time to curate short stories through her wardrobe. I asked her a few questions about her blog and her journey. Here’s what she had to say:

Which bloggers do you admire the most and why?

I love Blair of Atlantic-Pacific’s style. She has such a classic aesthetic yet flawlessly implements current trends, bright hues, and bold patterns. I definitely think were style sisters from another mother.

What is the story behind your blog’s name?

I wanted to somehow implement my own name {i.e. Chanel}. The ‘files’ aspect came from the idea that files are known to withhold pertinent information. So, I thought connecting the chanel + files would essentially say that i’m giving out information {to be stored by others} through my taste and personal style.
Where are you from/where do you currently live?

I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area and that’s where I currently reside.

Do you blog full time?

No. Monday – Friday I work and on a good day I can come home and take one set of pictures. But for the most part I tend to use the weekends as my time to take images and create content for the following week.

What is your 9-5?

I’m currently a luxury goods consignor and am also in the process of creating an e-commerce shop of all my favorite things. : )

What attracted you to your career?

Well I love high-end designer pieces but frankly hate their price-points. I believe that  now-a-days, many women, including myself are looking for great deals and want to comfortably shop without breaking the bank. Essentially that’s how I got into luxury consigning.
Would you like to blog full time?

I can’t say I wouldn’t enjoy blogging full-time but I can also say that blogging full-time isn’t necessarily my career goal.

What advice would you give to bloggers who are just starting out?

For bloggers just starting out I’d say that consistency is key. One of the number one questions I get asked is how do I maintain my blog after 4 years. The only answer I can think of is because I truly love and enjoy what I do. Whatever you decide to blog about, make sure it’s authentic to you and your style. If you’re blogging just because it’s the “happening” thing to do, that’ll definitely show itself through the quality of your work.

What is your biggest blogging pet peeve?

My biggest blogging pet-peeve is looking at other blogs and there’s just too much happening. Too many ads. Too many fonts. Too many colors. Less is {way} more if you ask me.

Has blogging impacted your fashion sense?

Blogging has certainly impacted my fashion sense and overall sense of style. Through the years I’ve figured out what looks good on my shape and what doesn’t. I’ve also edited my wardrobe over the years making sure that pieces I invest in pieces are classic enough that they’ll always be in style but still fun and edgy for today’s trends. I can’t say that 3 years ago my wardrobe was as polished and edited as it’s become.

What are your fashion tips for the summer season?

Some tips for the coming summer is to keep it fresh. A natural face -I love a sun kissed glow, thick brows, and bold lips are my go-to face for the coming season. I’m really really really into white this season more than ever so white will definitely be starring a role on my blog this season. A white blazer and pair of white culottes or palazzo pants are my 2 key pieces for creating some great looks. Get 2 pieces you know you can mix-and-match with anything and you’ve got yourself an endless amount of outfits.
I love sharing with my audience that you don’t have to have an unlimited budget to have great style. I’m all about mixing price-points and designers. I love a good investment piece but I also love saving money.
