Blogger Spotlight: Jenell of The Brwn Fox

I found Jenell’s blog in the early days of building this blog’s blogroll. (How many times can I but blog in a sentence eeeehhh.)
I immediately fell in love with her blog’s name AND her design skills. I mean seriously people, check out Her blog looks different from most that you see and her posts are diverse which I love. Check out the interview I did with her below and make sure to show her blog a little support! It’s what this is all about!

What started your love of DIY?
I have been doing DIY and crafty things as long as I can remember. In high school, I was the girl that saw a music video, and came to school a week later wearing something I saw in the video. The project that stands out most to me are the ripped and bleached jeans Lil Kim wore at the end of her ‘No Matter What People Say’ video. You couldn’t tell me nothing! I come from a family of crafty women and seamstresses. My creativity is generational.

Why did you decide to name your blog The Brwn Fox?
I am a full-time graphic designer, and one of my favorite things about design is typography. My name came from a famous pangram (a phrase that has every letter of the alphabet, so you can see how the type face looks. Originally used for typewriters.) The phrase in particular is The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog. Instead of being just quick, which I am when I work, I wanted to focus make it more personable, focusing on the love and pride I have for my skin and women who look like me.

How did you get started with your design business?
As a junior in college, the staff would ask me to various projects for school events. So, taking that experience, when I was laid off from my very first job out of college (last one in is always the first one out), I hit the ground running, and started putting design ads online. It took off and Elley-Gee was born, but after a re-brand I am still designing as The Brwn Fox.

Is your business full time or a side hustle?
It is full time, I wish it was a “side hustle”! If it were, I would have more time to sew. I work a full-time job as a designer for a social development gaming company, and when I get off, I got straight to work for my BFCreative clients. No rest for the wicked.

Do you take your own blog pictures?
I do not, my partner is my photographer! She always has good ideas, but with her working on another degree and me always being busy, it is hard to make time. I have a Pretty Girls Sew Olivia Pop Challenge just waiting to be worn and photographed.

What has been the hardest thing about blogging for you?
Time, finding the time! I legit never have time. I have to go out of my way to blog, workout and sew. It’s a lot! But I wouldn’t change it.

What are your future plans for your blog and business?
I want to keep my focus on small businesses, specifically businesses owned by women! I blog because I enjoy showing off my projects, so I will continue to do that. I am hoping to get in more time to sew, so that I can blog more often.

What advice would you give to a blogger who hopes to also become a business owner?
Both take an equal combination of patience, time and creativity. Be patient with yourself and your craft. You have a voice, and people need to hear your point of view. Blog for the enjoyment, and it will fall into place. Opportunities will start to open, and getting to where you want to be will become clear. Your goals may evolve, but always stay patient.

Give us a random fact about you.
I am obsessed with RuPaul! I need to meet him, like now. I have been in love with him since Supermodel (Work) was released. I would visit family in SC, and my favorite cousin has the full CD. We would dance, and sashay and serve as best we could at that age! It is still one of my favorite songs.

Jenell is originally from Brooklyn, NY but currently lives in Raleigh, NC. She is a full-time graphic designer at 3C Institute for Social Development where they create anti-bullying games and apps, as well as games for children with Autism and social development issues. In her downtime, she runs her own design business, and tries to fit in working out, sewing, and traveling!
