Brown Girl Bloggers Is Growing

GThe last few days of my life have been so stressful! I successfully migrated this blog from Blogger to WordPress while keeping the links in tact, added a membership area and added a forum. It’s something I’ve been thinking about doing for about a month but I put it off because I was scared I would screw it up.

Before I started this process I read about it and I saw that people said it was difficult but I didn’t really believe it would be that hard. I know a little code and I couldn’t imagine that WordPress was that much harder.

I was so wrong.

I completely lost the site once, had a lot of trouble with plugins and let’s not even get started on the members area. I plan to write a few blog posts about the process in case any of you are thinking of doing it yourselves. I will say that I will probably hire a developer or designer in the future because the stress was too much for my nerves and I wasn’t that great to be around according to my husband.

The reason I went through all the trouble was because this blog has grown so much bigger than I ever thought it would. I never imagined that it would turn into a community where you were asking questions, listening to my advice and wanting to get involved. Now that it is I felt that Blogger was doing the blog a disservice. There are so many more things and there’s no time like the present.

I want to let you know about all the new features of the site. I hope you take advantage of them so that this community can grow. They aren’t perfect and I’m sure I’ll be changing things and ironing out kinks in the upcoming weeks so keep in mind that it’s a learning process for me. My ultimate goal is to create sponsorship opportunities for minority women bloggers and I’ll only be able to do that if you support!

Here are a few of the new features:

Members Area

If you aren’t aware I manually add every blog to the blog roll so it takes a while for you to show up once you submit. I really wanted to streamline this so I created a members area where you can sign up with a profile that has your blog name and info about you as a blogger. You can also befriend other bloggers and use this to create connections. In the future I hope this will help me create sponsorship opportunities for you ladies. There are other features like mail too. Please register and fill out your profile so that the community can grow.

We now have a forum where you can list events and questions you have for other Brown Girl Bloggers and things that have to do with blogging in general. This will grow as more members show up but I’ll be keeping an eye on the forum and participating in all of the threads. If you notice things you’d like me to change please let me know.

You can now contribute to the blog. Read this page to find out more. Please keep in mind that this blog doesn’t currently make any money at all. You will be given credit for your posts but you won’t get paid. I hope this changes soon.

If you’re on the mobile site you’ll have to log in from your desktop to use all of the new features.

That’s it for now. Please subscribe to the email list below to hear about things we have happening in the future. Thanks so much for your support!

  • It can be really scary to let go of what you’re used too but WordPress is so much more versatile. I hope you give it a try again.

  • TC’s Views

I’ve gave WordPress a try years ago and found it to be too complex…So I stuck with blogger. But now that I’ve seen what you can do, I am starting to reconsider.

  • I can’t wait to the contributors’ posts start popping!

    Drea –

  • Congrats! We value your transparency and especially as fellow bloggers, it nice when bloggers share the real of an experience. Keep up the good work.

  • Oh yeah — I also just noticed this but I went to the blog roll and the image for Travel Blogs is linked incorrectly — it goes to discount blogs. :) Thanks for all you do and running this project! :)

  • Yay for growth! I don’t comment much but I’ve been seeing how much more energy has been going into this project from my feed reader! And congrats on moving to WordPress… it can be so difficult but you made it! :)

  • I’m really excited about the contribution section! :)
