Four Ways to Get Excited About Your Blog Again

excitedYou’ve been blogging for months, maybe years and you’re starting to get bored with your blog. You’ve considered scrapping the entire thing and just starting from scratch. But that means you’d lose your pageviews, comments and possibly an audience. Besides, starting over is not only risky, it’s scary. Don’t worry, though. Below are four ways to reignite your excitement for your blog:

1. Buy a brand new theme/layout

You probably look at your blog everyday, so naturally it starts to bore you. Instead of getting rid of your blog altogether, opt for a new layout. You could go the redesign route and seek out a web designer to create a custom theme just for you, but that will cost hundreds of dollars. So I suggest taking the less expensive route and buying a pre-made theme for your blog. Etsy and Themeforest are chockfull of affordable blog themes for both Blogger and WordPress blogs, most of which come with customization options.

2. Invite new voices to the mix

Sometimes you get bored with your blog because you’re doing everything for it. You’re the idea generator for your blog, the content creator, the social media manager, the photographer, the editor and everything in between. So how about inviting some new voices to the mix? You could put a call out for guest bloggers once a week or month or hire a contributor to write for your site on a regular basis. This way, you introduce your readers to other voices besides your own and diversify your content at the same time.

3. Introduce a new topic/feature to your blog

Blogging about the same topics over and over becomes stale — real fast. Moreover, it’s hard to think of new, exciting ways to write about the same thing over and over. If you feel yourself getting bored with the topics you write about, introduce a new topic to your blog or add a new feature to your blog. As long as the new topic or feature aligns with your overall mission, it should go over well with your readers.

4. Take a break

Sometimes you just need to step away from your blog, breathe and then come back to it when you’re ready. In the process, you may lose subscribers/readers and your pageviews may even plummet. But when you start feeling uninspired and bored with your blog, it’s best to stand back and assess why you feel that way. Forcing yourself to churn out content without taking the necessary time to evaluate those emotions will put you on the fast track to a burnout. And generally, burnouts take much longer to recover from. Don’t do that to yourself or your blog. Take a break and return only when you feel you’re ready and excited about blogging again.

  • These are great tips! When I start to feel burnout I spend time focusing on my Youtube channel which is actually what I’m doing today.

  • As I’m looking to do more freelance writing, I have been considering the idea of opening up my blog for guest blog posts. I think this could really move my blog in an interesting direction. You’ve inspired me to actually put the call out – the page with the information is written, I just need to ask! Thanks Drea. :)

  • Yay! I’m so happy to know my posts have been helpful and applicable to your blog. Thanks for reading & sharing, girl!

Drea! You’ve given us another lifesaver! Thank you…I’ve already taken put some of your ideas to good use late last year. I’ve added a personal finance topic where I inform readers about the culture of money. Topics range anywhere from the ins and outs of filing taxes to protecting your credit. Your post proves that I am on the right path.

  • That’s a good idea, Zena! People love winning free stuff! And I agree – when you have an engaged audience, you feel more motivated to keep the content coming.

  • I think we go through highs and lows with our blog just with any business or job. Another idea is to run a contest or giveaway to spark interest and getting you audience engaged. I find the more engaged my audience is the more energy I feel to keep going.
