My First Weekend with Bloggers: The Good, The Bad, The Ugh

first blogger weekendThis past weekend was my first plunge into the blogger community and boy was it interesting. I attended Blogger Week in DC and the BGB Meet Up Candice hosted. I’m not sure what I expected to happen this weekend but the good news is that by Sunday I was inspired and my to-do list was long. Here is a recap of my Good, Bad, & Ugh.

Let me start with the bad. I’ll just be honest since I’m among family. The logistics and planning of Blogger Week left something to be desired. I bought a ticket over a month ago and was really excited about a week filled with events.  It wasn’t what I imagined. I had no clue what the agenda was until I got there and the conference wasn’t really hosted. There was no flow. I did meet some cool people and left with a few takeaways but the lack of logistical planning really threw me off. In a nutshell, it was worth the money and I would recommend it to any blogger who’s been blogging less than two years.

So the ugh. That’s the way I feel and when I don’t know how to feel. I learned that I’m not as outgoing as I thought I was. I still struggled to introduce myself to people proactively. I wrote about my first networking event a few weeks ago and I still haven’t improved from there…bad girl. I swear I’m outgoing and I’m not shy but I discovered, I’m not good with small talk and starting conversations. We all have things we need to work on and I guess I need to move this to the top of my list.

The good. I promise I’m not just saying this but the #BGBMEETUPDC was the best part of my weekend. I had the chance to have an engaging conversation with about 20 other Brown Girl Bloggers. Although the time was short (or flew by), I felt like I connected with them on our blog struggles and ambitions. It was good to meet the members of this community in person and walk away excited about working together and supporting each other. I’ve found that just talking and sharing with like-minded women is inspiring and reenergizes me. I was so grateful to spend the day with these wonderful ladies.

Did you attend Blogger Week? I’d love to hear what you thought about it or the Meet Up if you attended.

  • Great review – thanks for sharing your honest feedback! I sometimes struggle with forming organic connections at networking events so we can definitely work on that together!

Love your honesty! I’m headed to my first blogger meet-up and as an introvert, am always on my awkward black girl hype lol. But I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait to share!

  • Zena great write-up. I can honestly say I’m with you on the outgoing part. I’d say that small talk is one of my struggles as well, lol. The BGB Meetup was my first dive into any type of blogger get together and I really enjoyed myself amongst everyone there.

  • Of course with any event it’s what you make of it but the BGB meet up hit y blogging spot. We need to do it again sooner than later.

  • So I share the same thoughts about the good and bad (I’m a big mouth social gal so the ugh doesn’t apply lol). The Blogger Week activities could have definitely been more structured and the flow was non-existent but Sunday made it all better :) The BGB Meetup was exactly what I hoped for!
