This Is How I Fight Procrastination

I’m a procrastinator. I’m a serious, never want to do anything, only want to lay on the couch with a book and hang out with my friends type of procrastinator. I’m a let me wash the dishes… and do my hair… and watch these Youtube videos procrastinator.

Can you relate?

Lately, I’ve been getting stuff done and I wanted to share what I’ve been doing to stay on top of everything I have to do. Here’s how I fight procrastination…


I do the things I’m avoiding the most first. 

Have you ever heard the saying that procrastination is fear? I’ve found this to be 100% true. The things I put off the longest are usually the ones I’m scared to do. When I don’t know how someone will react or how my work will be perceived I get scared and put it off. Usually, I’ll do the thing I was afraid of and realize it wasn’t so bad after all.

I work in 20 minute increments. 

I’ll tell myself that I’m going to work for 20 minutes and after that I can have a break. I set an alarm so that I don’t stare at the clock and get down to business. At the 20 minute mark I decide if I want to keep working or take a break. If I do want a break I’ll take a small 5 to 10 minute break and get back to business. This helps me because sometimes I get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I have to do.

I look at my consequences list.

My list is filled with things like how disappointed I would be a year from now if I haven’t reached any major goals, how my income depends solely on if I work or not, how my family will feel to know I’m slack, etc.

You get the idea right?

I printed this list out and stuck it on my mirror and in front of my desk. Every time I feel like procrastinating I take one look at that list and realize I won’t be able to shop if I don’t work.

I use a master to-do list. 

I have certain things I need to do in my personal life, things I need to do for Brown Girl Bloggers and things to do for other clients. I created a list and broke it down into sections. Each section has what I need to do that day, week and month to keep everything running smoothly. This has been so helpful to me.

I got my friends and family to hold me accountable.

Making my intentions public is great because I do what I say so that I don’t look crazy. My friends are always checking on me to see how my goals are coming along. I’ve been staying ahead of the things I need to do so that they can’t call be out. My husband also loves to harass me about reaching my goals and we’ve been competing to see who can get the most done. I’ve made sure to surround myself with people who love me and want the best for me. I also make sure to return the favor.

    I am going to try and follow this list and not procrastinate about doing so. I love the idea of consequences! Idf nothing else motivates me that should do it!
    I typically fight procrastination by making lists and scratching the items off as I complete them. Looking at the ticked off items propels me to want to complete the list.
