Blogging & The Green Eyed Monster
Today’s post is inspired by an email I got from a blogger last night. She noticed that I started blogging again and emailed to ask for some advice about blogging and jealousy. Basically, she sees people who started blogging around the same time she did or even later who have bigger audiences and it discourages her. She planned to make blogging a career and she feels it isn’t going fast enough for her liking.
I would love to pretend that I’m perfect but that just isn’t the case. I’ve gotten jealous at times too because I’m human however I can say that it rarely happens anymore.
I realized that I needed to focus on myself because that is the only way my audience will grow. I also realized that the world is huge and although I might enjoy blogging and I might want a bigger audience one day it might not happen. This might not be my ultimate calling and I’m ok with that.
I’m just trying to figure it out as best as I can and I’m exploring all options open to me. My future may hold blogging and entrepreneurship as a career or maybe I’ll be an employee for another company or a world traveler. I don’t know.
My advice to this blogger is to direct her efforts into making her blog the best it can be. She should ask herself some really hard questions about the quality of her blog. Is it up to par? Does she invest money into her craft? Does her passion show through her work? It takes a while. It takes learning and mistakes and it takes realizing that this might always be a fun hobby that she might never get any payment from.
I’d also recommend learning from the bloggers she envies. What are they doing that you wish you were doing? How can you do something similar (without copying.)
I’d love to hear what you think about this and what your advice to this blogger would be in the comments.
